Alright guys, I got quite a stash of valvoline vv966 5w40 229.51 oil in the christmas autozone sale. I've been to lubrizol and compared 504/507 to 229.51 and they are very close. The 5w30 meets the 504 spec but the 5w40 doesn't. Mostly because of the viscosity I believe. I have enough oil changes for 5-6 changes. The OCI is 10k.
Give me your opinion or point some things I haven't thought of before I embark on this. I have awhile before I do since I am still on the free oil changes. Thanks!

If you have your service done by the dealer they have documentation for warranty. If you do it yourself, it is very common for them to ask for your records including receipts for oil, filters and other maintenance items. If you can not come up with them it is pretty common to have the warranty denied.

So I would strongly suggest selling that oil on Craig's list and getting the correct stuff.

After the warranty is out, then if you want to you can consider using it. Personally given the reputation of VW and cams, I would not.

Back about 12 to 13 years ago we had the son of our secretary buy a new VW gas. His engine locked at about 25K miles. Seems he never changed or checked the oil. They deny warranty. He came up with receipts from his friend at the quick lube place for oil changes. It did not work, they can tell if you never changed it. I was considering buying the car cheap until I researched the cost.

I would not take the chance.

The VW DPF engines need 507 oils, and if the DPF fails under warranty, you might be denied the repair. DPFs are very expensive, don't take that risk!

507 oils are a lower viscosity, however, what makes them much different is that they contain less zinc and phosphorous to protect the DPF.

Wait until your warranty is finished before you go off piste with the oil if I were you

It has similar saps levels to the VW507.00 so technically should be compatible with the dpf

In our non DPF VW 2.0TDi's on fixed service intervals we use the PETRONAS Syntium AV 5w-40 (VW505.01, C3), but I'd still use that oil if it had a DPF because of the reduced oil consumption compared to the thinner longlife oil (which obviously sends less burnt oil/ash through the DPF)

I would personally use it

I think I will use it after warranty is out. But I will use it at 7500 mile intervals. I could even use it as spring or summer fill. I don't really see how a thicker oil could cause damage, except in the winter.
How would they test a sample if I had a failure? And if they did, I doubt it would read much differently?

Your still under warranty, and VW TDI engines do quite like to grind cams to dust with the wrong oil

Not worth the risk IMO...

That's wrong information. The PD's were known to grind cams to dust, even with the correct 505.01 oil. That's why a lot of people switched to the wrong oil to reduce the cam wear.

They wouldnt have to test it. You either have a receipt showing you got the correct oil and filter or they deny your warranty. Also, some issues you may have would be a dead give-away to them such as the DPF being busted because of the wrong oil, etc.

That is only on the PD engines, that they have cam issues.

A 2013 would be common rail, and not subject to the cam problems.

LoL....first you have to know what does vw504&507 standards mean

http://www.oilspecifications.org/volkswagen.php

VW 504.00
The VW 504 00 specification superceedes the VW 503 00 and VW 503.01 specifications. VW 504 00 oils are suitable for engines meeting the demands of Euro IV emissions standards.

VW 507.00
Low SAPS oils suitable for Euro 4 engines and almost all VAG diesel engines from 2000 onwards with extended service intervals, unitary injector pumps and also Pumpe-Düse ("PD") engines. Excludes V10, R5 engines and VW Commercial vehicles without fitted DPF (diesel particulate filters) – these must use a 506 01 specification oil.

I would not use vw 504 oil in 2.0 CR engine with DPF system

OMG that was clever one!

1) How will you do that? Do you have lab at home?
2) After that you will only have greater oil consumption in engine ( due playing home lab technician mixing different oils....)

And please.....engine will not sieze because SAE 40 oil is in it....I know that you are all frenzy about 0w20 0w30 oils in USA.....in the middle of the Texas ( no need for so thin oils there at all) :p

Agreed, the DPF could clog up. Additionally those turbos are variable vane and get gummed up with slow driving and the wrong oil.
Otherwise its a strong motor.
