In the past I used DTE 26 in the gearbox of my mills but I now live in Hawaii and none is available locally. Mobil Gear 600 XP 68 is available. Can the gear oil be used in place of the hydraulic oil?
Thanks,
Rob

If it is a gearbox, then I can't see why mobil gear would be bad

In fact, Mobil Gear 600 XP 68 would be more suitable since it has the extreme pressure characteristics and load-carrying properties that you look for in a gear oil.

DTE 26 & MG 600 XP both have EP/anti wear additives. However, it is not too often you see a gearbox in the industry that has a AGMA of 2 (68 Vg), must be a very light load application. Unsure if you are switching fluids in the gearbox from Syn to MO or not. If so adequate purge is required and be attentive of seal leakage.
