I have a 1980s Craftsman 5/22 snowblower I bought used a few years ago. I'm trying to ID the exact model so that I can find the proper belt sizes. I'm also trying to see if I can locate the electric starter kit that goes with it. I believe it has a Tecumseh engine, as I just replaced the carb and the part number was for a Tecumseh.

The only serial/model numbers I could find were on top of the engine. It reads: 143 744C92 SER 5004B

Some photos of it:

Drag the old belt to the auto parts store where they have a stretcher-majjigger to get you a new one. If torn between two sizes get the smaller one. Save its packaging or sharpie its length on the inside of the belt guard.

Just going off a hunch here, but Craftsman model numbers are usually 3 numbers, a decimal point, then 6 numbers. So, I'm thinking what you have there is 144.744092. Googling that model number brought me to this page, which shows that engine model number 144.744092 was used on snowblower model number 536.882500.

While this may work you'd do better to order a new belt from Sears that is designed for the snowblower.

All belts are not the same.

Tough to dispute that, but without a definite model number for the machine, guess and fit is your only way.

One positive thought, I wouldn't think Craftsman had all that many different model numbers for a 5hp/24" 30+ years ago.

Only a fool would order the belt, or any parts really, directly from Sears. You do realize that you can get the same quality belt (or better) for way cheaper than what Sears charges. Example, needed a carburetor. Sears charged about $90. Got the exact same thing from a dealer elsewhere for $37. Spark plug from Sears is $6.99. Get the same exact thing at Wal-Mart for $1.89.

Besides, Sears will be out of business within 12 months. They are beyond dead. Good riddance.

All belts are not the same, that's my point. They have different friction characteristics.

Sure, you might find a fan belt at a parts store that seems to fit but it doesn't mean it will last or not slip.

First I would go to a sears hardware store . They stock belts, maybe not everyone ever made ,but alot of then by me. If that didn't pan out, find a local mower repair shop. The one by me has helped me out alot of times. And they usually have what I need in stock, so no waiting or shipping costs. Make sure you bring whatever part your looking to get to match it up so you only make one trip. An electric starter for an old mower might be a Ebay only item.,,,
