Hope you guys feel better Trav!

Not stuff to mess with, that is for sure...I've learned to really, really starting to take care of myself when sick as I get older...

50Mg. of Zinc per day with food helps boost the Immune System.

Get better soon!!

trav, what you have is a strain of avian flu.

1. pls ask pcp to test for the strain so you know which strain you missed in your flu shot regime.

2. You have to patient and very diligent in treating chest congestion.

3. Did the PCP give a batch of steriods? and Anti-biotics?

4. Ask PCP for an inhaler/puffer

5. To to any pharmacy (are you in MA now? or Deutschland?) and get a bottle of Mucinex (guaifenesin) , just this as tab or liquid. I prefer tabs. if you can't find it just PM me you info and I will mail you a bottle.

6. take Mucinex (guaifenesin) every 3 to 4 hours 1 tab and take a puff from inhaler same frequency and DRINK a lot of water. Eat a lot of fresh fruits and eat a lot pls.

7. put a humidifier in your ROOM where you sleep or spend the day.

Good my mein freund!

My wife had the flu 3 weeks ago, I thought I was going to get it for sure but I didn't then. Well sure enough last night flu symptoms started, mine usually starts with sore throat , then runny nose then caugh.
I think the best prevention is a good immune system, flu shots don't always work.

Thanks guys. I am sure this will be ok, i have a good Doctor. I cant answer every question but here is a synopsis.
Last sept he sent me to a pulmonary specialist for test because i was a long time smoker albeit not a heavy one, he does this every 5 years.
That was fine, no issues. I have allergies to a few things and for that my German doc gives me an Aarane N inhaler. I have a years supply, the US doctor doesn't know much about it, its not FDA approved.

He gave me antibiotics and Prednisone. I take vitamin C daily anyway.
Blood test i had last month is fine, bad cholesterol is normal or below, good is normal and triglycerides are low. I have yearly blood test and over the years they have remained stable with no flags, nothing trending.
BP without medication is fine.

Thanks again guys, now i'm going back to bed.

Calcium or sodium ascorbate is the best Vitamin C with bioflavonoids. Onions and garlic with every meal will help out alot as well.
Get well.

I had a terrible cough/cold which began after Thanksgiving. The only thing that actually helped me was the OTC product commonly known as Mucinex (Guaifenesin). I got the no-name brand from Kroger and took it twice a day for almost 2 weeks. It actually takes at least 2 days before it kicks in, but you'll know it when it does. Your breathing will sound like a rusty accordion (because the congestion in your lungs is gradually being loosened), and then you'll be able to cough up the lousy phlegm and get rid of it. You'll feel much better afterwards.

Good thread when people with experience chime in.
I hope I never can on this subject.

A question on the prevention front
Do you know those lung "exercisers" they give to everyone admitted into a hospital-I assume for more than a few days? The patient blows into it and moves a scale (a flapper).

They say it's to ward off infections while we're in the hospital and relatively motionless.

Could it be that something as simple as this is what we need to do in our sedentary society to stave off respiratory infections?

Making our lungs work at or above a given rate "toughens" them or simply clears them? Kira

I read and heard from reliable sources that those lung exercises are actually very good. I do them in the shower or outside away from cars, etc. I take a deep breath thru my nose, and fill my lungs, then exhale forcing out as much air as possible and repeat a few times. I have no proof if it works or not, but I had no problems taking a breathing test at a pulmonary doctor. He said my lung function was perfect. I think it clears your lungs and strengthens and diaphragm.

I started smoking when I was 6. I battle with the weed still. My folly has destroyed my lungs. Back in '08 I had a cold and was trying to get through the week. On Friday, I went home sick and Saturday morning was in the ER. O2 in my blood was 60% of normal. I had a temp of 100. I was admitted and put on antibiotics and oxygen. I sweat the bed sheets sopping wet and my temp peaked at 104. I fought the pneumonia with fever. I boiled it out my system during a night of very strange dreams. The fever broke about 4 am. They kept me for 4 days. My doctor didn't get clear me for work for 3 weeks. A yr later, my mastectomy was running long. The anesthesiologist was bored and vac'ed out a pint of guck from my left lung.

You are talkingt about the use of an incentive spirometer. By blowing into the spirometer and making a small ball hover along a scale, you make sure your lungs expand fully. This helps prevent infection vert effectively and that's why the spirometer is given to patients in the hospital where infection risk is high. You can buy a spirometer for about $20 and use it at home or at work or anywhere to exercise your lungs.

Trav, the steriod is good but you will need the OTC Mucinex (guaifenesin), take it when you awake as you need to drink a lot of water. it starts working for me right away, the stuff starts coming out, it softens up the curdy cough in the lungs.
The puffer relaxes the lung passages and allows the stuff to come out faster.

Feel better!
