As some of you may have noticed, i recently purchased a brand new Toyota LC Prado.
So yesterday i went to the dealer to do the first break in oil change (Both the manual and the dealer recommends doing it).
After i got back home i noticed that they they charged me for a Gasoline oil filter that is commonly used in most 4-cyl Toyota gasoline engines. I was a bit skeptical at first so i went out, popped open the hood and verified the oil filter model printed on the filter can and they DID USE the gasoline engine oil filter.

Do you think i should leave it like that or i should go back and start a (remove eidt - mod)?

Does using a gasoline engine oil filter in a diesel engine affects its reliability, performance and longevity?

PD. I have another friend that purchased the same car along with me and i'll verify with his to see if they also used the gasoline engine oil filter. Ill report back when i have the opportunity to check his car.

In case anyone wants to know what filter they used, it was a Toyota 90915-YZZG1 and according to a Toyota parts website it should be a 90915-20003

It's not whether it is for a gasoline or a diesel engine. It is all about the holding capacity of the filter, the filtration rate, the internal bypass valve setting, and other internal filter parameters.

Take it back. Go to the parts counter and ask for the correct filter for your engine. If it is different that what they installed, your next stop needs to the the service manager (the manager, not one of the service writers.) Demand installation of the correct filter and get the oil topped off. Be sure they used the correct oil in the first place. Ask for some compensation for your trouble--maybe your next oil change free.

Maybe Toyota issued a TSB or recall, telling dealers to use that gasoline engine filter on diesels. If you can find that, you can be sure that the oil change was done properly.

Some car companies use the same part number on gasoline and diesel engines. VW often does that. I have seen some VW oil filters say "25,000 miles gasoline, 15,000 miles Diesel."

What ^ he says.

I guess I would be more concerned what oil they used than the filter type although both are important. Have you looked in the owners manual to see what filter and oil they call out for use?

Fuel filters shouldn't have a bypass.

90915-2003 is also used on TOyota/Lexus gasoline engines such as the VZ, MZ, JZ (all V6's).

So... the only thing you may have worry about is less oil filter volume.

Yeah, i just found out that most Toyota filters are compatible, the main difference seems to be just the size.
