Post your cars from the good old days..when having a car meant taking a girl to the movies or to the local diner. Or just cruising with the guys. Nobody cared about which oil was the best or what filter has the best rating.. all that mattered was that it started, ran and got you out of the parents house.

Whatever your age you can remember the good old days when having gas money was just enough. Did you have the nicest car around? or did you have a beater? Were you proud or ashamed? Did you drive the parents car during high school? or did you have your own?
Was there a car that you envied? if so what car did you want but couldnt have?

My story: First car was a Subaru 1800. I worked all summer at a golf course and with help from my parents I shelled out $1000 for it. It leaked oil everywhere, was rusting and needed tons of work. Nobody around had one so I was pretty cool for awhile. Sold it the next summer and bought my dream car..a mustang SVO!! Loved that car! but traded it for a Ford EXP!! I do not see these cars on the road anymore so memories are about all I have. The car I wanted but never got was a late 80s dodge shelby charger!!

Sure there were guys with camaros, trans-am, corvette, chevelle, nova..but i wasnt one of them.

The pictures im posting are examples, as i dont have actual pictures of those cars handy.

First car was a 1994 Buick LeSabre Limited, white with plenty of the paint peeled off exposing the beautiful GM grey primer. Burgundy cloth interior.

Everyone always piled into the car, it was like a couch and everyone could fit. It floated down the road, all of the struts were wasted.

Having just enough for gas was an all too real statement. I can't begin to think about all the times I was putting a few bucks in at a time to just get to one place or another.

Gas gauge stopped working so I would fill up every 300 miles. That system never let me down.

In the winter with the heat on, if you stopped, the car was so rotted out and had enough exhaust leaks that exhaust would pour into the cabin. Come to a stop, turn off the heat.

The memories are priceless though.

Mine was my first, a 1984 Cutlass Calais. Awesome car based on GM's G-body platform. Mine was loaded to the gills...Olds V-8, T-Tops, chrome SSIII wheels, etc. It was cherry.

The white one is mine, and the '87 Brougham was owned by a friend of mine in college.

I don't have any photos. My first car was an 86 Renault Alliance...Poop. When it was totaled when I rear ended. I ended up with and Omni GLH, loved that car.

Did not own a car while in high school. First year of college I was driving this POS... Actually, the engine itself was pretty decent despite being seriously underpowered. The rest of the car on the other hand...

1989 mazda 323.

It was classy and had chrome strips on the bumper, window frames, etc. I watched "Mad max" then blacked all this stuff out. I put little balls of newspaper in every hole in my 13" rims then spray painted them black too. Didn't want paint getting on my brakes.

This car also had the 80's Japanese quirk of holding the door handle up when closing it so the lock would "take". They all did it, for a while, then they all stopped.

Clutch or internal transmission problems scrapped it. Port-installed R12 AC worked until the boneyard.

Mazda made a few thousand "GTX" 323s with 4wd, twin cams, and a turbo. The parts store guys would say, do you have the 1.6 or the 1.6, huh, I'm confused.

It had a retractable antenna that was about 4 feet long when fully extended, it came up out of the A-pillar diagonally. When extended it snagged on garage doors backing out.

I had the car I wanted.
A 1973 VW Super Beetle Sport Bug edition exactly as shown minus the yellow stripe on the bumpers. Had the quicker steering, wider wheels, sport steering wheel, sport seats with side bolsters, wider wheels and tires and a reduced throw shifter topped with walnut Wolfsburg shifter knob. Someone broke into my car, chipping a wing vent window to steal my shifter knob.

No pictures of my first car either. It was a '74 Olds Cutlass Supreme, silver with a black top and black interior. 350 "Rocket" under the hood (gold valve covers!) and deeply recessed gauges, I was quite fond of that car.

Left it in Ontario when we moved out east and my grandfather sent it to the wreckers

2nd car, which I drove through high school was my mom's 1986 Olds Custom Cruiser wagon. Burgundy with burgundy interior. The 307 was anemic and the tranny had issues but it got you where you needed to go. Sucking back gas the whole way, LOL!

I remember that. Some euro cars had this "feature" as well. That was to prevent one from accidentally locking themselves out.

1976 buick regal 350ci 2bbl. Ran well , had an awesome carb sound with the breather lid flipped.
It had such a good ride, and it handled well considering is was on bias ply tires.
Mine looked like this but i had the black vinyl 1/2 top.

The doors were incredibly heavy if you opened them on a slope!

I still miss that car. In a few years if i find one in good shape, i'm buying it. But with a kid in college i'm not buying anything right now.

Mine was a 63 VW bug. My dad bought it wrecked and he and my brother patched it back together. My brother drove it for a year or two until he was able to buy his Chevy Nova SS. The bug was kept to get me through high school, which it did. It was the ugliest car on campus, especially after my $99 Maaco, orange, paint job. Fourth gear actually went out on my way to pick up my new car I traded the bug in on.

66 Mustang with a 200 cubic inch 6 cylinder and 3 speed manual - non synchronized in first.

It was a blast.

Unfortunately the floors disappeared, along with the cowl, rear quarters, etc.

My first car in high school was a 1947 chevy stylemaster 4 door. One of the ugliest body styles chevy ever made as far as I was concerned, but it got me where I wanted to go. Paint was bad, so I repainted it gloss black, put on porta-walls, and nosed and decked it so it did kinda look cool back in the day. (it was 1960) Also had a straight pipe exhaust. For graduation, I got a 1952 Ford Victoria (2 dr. ht.) V/8 with 3 speed on the column.

1986 Volkswagen Jetta Deluxe. My first car. In 2001. Had the same wheels my Blazer does now.. the same exact: American Racing AR-157. (No longer made.) I bought them myself, +1 sized to 14", polished alloy, brand new, from STS Tire and Auto in Bayonne NJ for $1100 - yes, with new Continental tires.

Got hit at like 30MPH, T-boned my B-pillar, driver's side, in Edison NJ. I hopped out the other side, and the windows did not even break. 1990 Chevrolet Caprice Classic taxi - the last year of the "non-bubble" (ugly) ones. Later that same year.

I think those wheels made it onto a Nissan.. 4×100.

I had a tan 1997 Ford Explorer XLT. At the time I hated it because it was such a gas pig. Looking back though, I didn't know anything about cars and I didn't treat it very well yet all that ever needed fixed was an O2 sensor. I would love to have it back.

Not mine, just an example.

I liked those. Was it a stick shift?

It certainly was. Cost me $1800 and only had like 75,000 miles on it. Wolfsburg emblem on the side. I learned to drive stick on that car. I loved that car.

I would buy another... in time. (I plan on having several cars. Not next week or month, or even year. But I have a vision. I think like a rich man.)

This was 2001, and I did not yet have a digital camera..

I remember the clutch throw being long, compared to my second car: a Delphin Grey 1986 BMW 325es, with M-Technic package. That was 2002. That car cost me $1000 and gas hit a bottom of 89 cents a gallon. Thank you, Jersey City..

Didn't have a car in high school -- in fact not until I left college in 1976. The '75 Ford Maverick sedan was actually purchased by my fiancee with an inheritance; MSRP was about $4300, as I recall. Ours was a light metallic green, with a matching cloth/vinyl interior, some fake wood strips and chrome bits, and the larger 250 cid I6. I learned to change oil, coolant, and other things on it. It rode well for the time, and we ran from Lafayette, LA, down to NO at least once a month, a 250-mile round trip, at 55-65 (those were the days of the double-nickel speed limit, remember?). I think it averaged around 15 mpg, which was darn good when gas was .55/gallon.

It's hard to find a pic of a 4-door Maverick on the web. All of them seem to be coupes and Grabbers.
