Both are 5w40's and roughly the same price. I'm buying the from the usual online place. Does anyone have an edge or can I pick either one?

Please don't suggest other oils (I'm in europe, this is by far the cheapest oil I can get).

Car in question is an oldie 150k mile, 1997 Renault Laguna, 1.8 liter, 95 hp, 5 liter sump. OCI is 9000 miles (Usually takes around 6 months). Engine manual only asks for API SH.

Ok, here they are:

TOTAL ENERGY 9000 5W40 (€ 25.00)

SHELL HELIX HX7 5W40 (€ 25.90)

The Total one meets slightly more stringent mfg specs, for example MB 229.5, so I'd probably lean towards it. However, since your application only calls for API SH, then this may not even matter too much.

It's very possible that it would make absolutely no difference in real world operation which one you use. Just pick one and stick with it. The detail differences may amount to just that, details. Once this has been settled you can move on to other maintenance questions like the cooling system, brakes, tires, transmission, fuel system and your driving habits.

Thanks, guys. Went with the Total for the slightly cheaper price and slightly better specs met.
