If its not one thing, it's another. Lately I have had some random ignition arc sounds come through the speakers (not consistent). Sounded just like the sound the coil makes when you short it to ground. So I decided to investigate the coil and noticed a big crack on it that seemed to grow every day. FordTechMakuloco has a great video on these coils and their issues, and also 01rangerxl had a good post a while back with his coil that had cracked.
(The truck ran perfectly fine interestingly enough)

The new coil

The underside (not too terribly bad)

And of course "Made in China"

First time in a long time I actually ordered something online for the truck, but got a smoking deal on it and it was shipped in a couple of days. Saved over a hundred bucks by not going to the dealer. (Heck, the dealer made $850 from me in less than 2 weeks)

Printed in USA by robots.

BTW, being a Ford Ranger, and they don't make them anymore(don't want competition to the holy F150) I wouldn't be surprised that it was from China. Since the Ford Ranger is still being built outside of the North American market.

Its funny, I saw the same amazon review the other day.

It does seem that more OEM parts are being made in China overall, I know that even new Motorcraft water pumps have a FoMoCo China sticker on them...

That coil also fits Taurus/Sable, Windstar/Freestar, and I am sure another vehicle I can't think of at the moment. Either way they are all platforms/engines that are no longer used. A lot of Motorcraft parts are made in China lately.

You should've gotten Denso.

The Denso 673-6014 ignition coil for your 2002 Ranger is made in Canada.

Sadly the Beck Arnley coil is made in China now. It was made in Germany up until last year

eBay provides the country of origin in some listings now.

340K on this one... and its a waste spark, so it has to jump 2 gaps and fire twice as often.

Are you seeing a decline in parts quality on the Chinese parts? I know you haven't had the best luck with your transmissions.

The denso looks weird with the epoxy on top though...

With a lot of things yes. The 3W7Z-12029-AA coils used on the 2V 4.6, 5.4, 6.8L engines were made in China for a few years. It was not uncommon to have to go through 3-4 coils to get one good ones. The latest ones do not state country of origin on the bag, which means it should be USA, but who knows.

This is a good lesson to those who want to believe the lie that
Chinese quality can be good as long as it is made in a factory operated by a major brand name.....Fact is most stuff coming out of
China is JUNK..whether car parts, electronics, ect...the quality control even at the brand names you'd expect more from is [censored].

That's not good.

+1 for the Denso comment. I just put a Denso coil on the CVPI and its USA made. Its also a dead ringer for the original coil on the car. Just has a Denso sticker instead of the Ford one. Helped that it was cheaper than the Motorcraft option. The only coils cheaper were the generic ones like Standard Motor.

That's about how mine looked.

I got a BWD replacement at the time, and I want to say it was made in the USA, but I can't remember for sure. I might still have the box at home somewhere.

I dug up the BWD box and the coil I got (part # E260) is made in the US. I bought it over a year ago though, so that may be different now.

No problems from the BWD coil so far. If the BWD ever fails, I will probably try a Davis Unified Screamin' Demon. I was thinking about getting an Accel coil when the original went out, but the connector for the wiring harness is oriented differently on the Accel, and I was worried about clearance issues with the heater hoses, so I played it safe and got the BWD.

Did some serious driving today, and truck feels great. Smooth idle, etc. It was starting to get the occasional partial miss at idle the past few days, but today was great. Also not sure if it was just in my head, but previously, with the newish clutch, I was having slight shudder when slipping it from a dead stop, and today there was none (not even reverse) and I tried several time to get it to do it.. (Could just be coincidence or may have had a partial miss causing it to be jerky??)

I was going to ask you about yours and see how it was doing. Good to hear about the US made thing. Like you were saying, they may still be US made, but who knows now or in the future what they will be. Weird how they have horizontal and vertical connector versions on some...

On Rockauto, the pics for the denso look completely different on this part number.

On my CVPI I was interpreting some missing on take off as slipping first. So yes, it can feel like a shudder.

It does. Hmm. I would still probably use it, except it is one of the most expensive options.

What is interesting, that I did a quick ebay search on denso coils, and you can clearly see that they are rebranded MC's. The one on the left has the MC's logo blacked out, and the one on the right has the MC sticker peeled off.

disclaimer: I don't own either picture, they belong to their rightful owner and just being used as a reference.

Yeah, the Denso coils I bought had the original part number scraped off. IIRC, Visteon makes the OE Ford coils, while Motorcraft is aftermarket and may be them or some other company.

The one on the left is from the Focus. Debating if I need to change the one on the Focus. The original coil was cutting out as you'd take off from a light, had some cracks like above. Replaced it with a aftermarket and 6 months it was cutting out mid range. Didn't want to try another aftermarket so pulled one from a junker. It does have some smalls cracks also. It seems like it runs rough all the time, alot of vibration so could be a small miss. Gas mileage and runs ok though. Seemed to run smooth with the aftermarket though. Hate to spend on yet another one. And yes the spark plugs and wires are new.
