The anti-drain back feature in the Kohler filter is there to prevent dry start ups. Most cheap lawn mower filters don't have this feature and can cause excessive wear.
If you have room for a taller filter, you can run a Fram 3614, Delco PF53, Motorcraft FL-910S, or Purolator L10241. These filters are about an inch longer and are VERY common cross reference parts. I am currently running the Motorcraft FL-910S on my Kohler Command. I put a picture of the motorcraft filter on the engine in this post:

Reno, what Kohler engine and what application? For horizontal and vertical shaft Kohler V-twins, Like said in the X-ref lists, I run Motorcraft FL400 (or equiv) provided there's room in the machine the engine is on.
Been using whatever I had on a 19.5 hp single B&S for the past 5 years. That being said, it's a horizontal mount, and anything that has the same threads will fit. Much better than paying $10+ for a Genuine ______ filter.
