Wow...what a shame.

Is it true you can post any article about Detroit and people won't even read it, they'll just create a post not related to the topic for a quick bash of the community?

What was in Detroit, however, was Tiger Stadium.

I wonder if the photographer got any pics there? It was closed since 1999 and demolished about 2008-2009. The article says the photographer is just 24 so its likely he did not get there in time.

It sounds as if the current owners of the stadium bought the property for almost nothing, and are scrapping it out.

They are likely do very well, considering the small investment. They story talks about some of the obvious things. They sold the turf. They made more on just scrap copper than they paid for the whole stadium. My guess is that they have sold many of the fixtures, and are selling anything and everything.

Most of the substantial sales are probably through some shell companies which record all of the profit. That way the property-owning company can be taken through bankruptcy if needed, and the owner can explain away the blight by claiming that they aren't making any money on the deal. The poor condition might even be part of a plan to get zoning concessions and public funding for the demolition.

Guess which picture is Hiroshima and which one is the auto capital of the world?

The bottom picture is Hiroshima

Just for clarity....I didn't post the article to slam Detroit. I also didn't know that it was located fairly far outside the city (as many stadiums are).

But, we all know that Detroit USED to be a great city. Vibrant, good place to raise a family, and all the other trappings of a decent metropolis.

Not so much anymore. But the people (some of them) are really trying to bring it back.

It's going to take a generation. My opinion.

A fine automobile, those Packards. "Ask the man who owns one!"

I wonder what fell through with the 12 million and 18 million dollar offers that came shortly before it sold for half a million at auction.

Apparently so.

I loved the city of Detroit. It's people are vibrant, they are survivors too. The city itself as a company is wrecked though. That former mayor cooked the books and helped leave the city in financial ruin.
There is talk about moving the people from the lesser populated areas into the city and turning the area into farmland.
I'd like to see that to be honest. Let the citizens farm the land and become sharecroppers. It'll give them something to do,while also feeding them and once harvested they'll get a cheque.
Beats leaving the land vacant and doing nothing.
Detroiter's are survivors. They've been on top,and they've swirlled the toilet bowl and one thing I've learned is font count them out.
Yes today it's an eyesore but don't kid yourselves,Detroit is the state of America today and in a few short years most any major city could be what detroit is now.
Those who trash Detroit today need to understand that Detroit was the manufacturing capital of the country. And it's decline is the countries decline,it just takes a while to trickle down.
The city needs to downsize. If relocation is what needs to be done then do it. Give the relocatees a comparable home to the one they are moving from. Give them someplace to call home and watch the area flourish.
When all people see is boarded up windows and overgrown yards they couldn't care less what their yard looks like.
Give them a reason to be proud and they will pay it back with vibrant communities, that people want to live in.
Yes Detroit is in a tough spot, how they deal with it will be the blueprint, that many other cities will have to follow as they decline too.

Cuba-US normalization: US tourists flock to see Cuba before it gets 'Americanized' and Cubans flock to see the US before it looks like Cuba, or Detroit.

This I don't get. Its amazing when you travel some places and some of the fees on stuff like rental cars are for concessions and stadiums that visitors often couldn't care less about.

+100000
They do it up here too.
Welfare for the rich.

I made a wrong turn going to River Rouge, MI and ended up in some nasty area of Detroit before I could get turned around (the days before GPS haha). Most scared I have ever been driving a truck, and we go to some pretty nasty areas. Columbia, SC has some nasty areas too, but you wouldn't think it.

It still is. The casinos and Dan Gilbert are doing a great job of reviving the city. They have great sports teams, some amazing restaurants etc. I used to travel there and I didn't think it was that bad. I felt safer in Detroit than I did in Gary IN.

I'm sure you're willing to pay the bill with higher taxes too.

That's because you were in the Disney Land part of Detroit, walk through the magical gates and you think it's nice. Travel outside that area and...well...good luck !

I've worked in Detroit since 1985 and been to all areas. We did the same ritual every day when working, pray that the truck doesn't break down or pray we get sent to Disney Land.

I do think it will get better because they finally have a Mayor with a brain. He turned around a bad hospital into a very good one. If he can do the same for Detroit it should be nice.

I don't think a casino makes for a better place to live and/or raise a family. They seem to provide some employment at first....with promises of a "thriving" community...yet soon show the bad side. Gambling addiction, wasted lifestyle, late night mayhem, traffic, drunk driving, and produce nothing positive.

Yea look at Atlantic City. Its turning into a dump with billions of $$$$$$$$ in gambling spots that no one needs since all states are jumping on the bandwagon. Yet another reason not to move to NJ

Casinos attract crime, prostitution, drugs, alcoholics, compulsive type behaviors , crimes targeting tourists, ....etc...

Stay away.
