The Owners Manual calls for 5W30 or 5W40, but Mobil 1 0W40 says it's good for most Volkswagens. I have several quarts of the OW 40 and wonder if I can use it in a 2015 VW Golf?

Thanks for the distinction. The Manual doesn't specify that it is a 502.00 specifically (they also list 503.00 and 504.00), but I did find the VW approved list for 502.00. I intend to use Mobil 1, but was a little surprised not to see Shell Rotella, 5W40 on the list. I used to use Rotella on my Volvo Turbo Wagon and found it to be a great oit.

I live in NW Wisconsin which, most years, gets temperatures below zero for days on end. Not this year, though.

Rotella is geared towards a different target market - heavy duty diesel applications. Potentially it could pass the VW spec, but SOPUS didn't bother to submit it for such testing since they already have other oils for this purpose.
