I have done both ways, and I prefer the drain plug and refill method. Faster and easier for me. To each his own


I wish I could use one of those methods. I've been putting off my ATF change because it's such a pain to do. In BMWs there is no dipstick, so after draining the fluid to fill it you have to have the car jacked up in the air, level, and running and at operating temperature and pump fluid into the fill plug until it starts overflowing. Once it starts overflowing you have correct level. Crawling under the car while it's running sounds like fun.
 
Pulling the plug on the trans nets something like 6L of fluid. Yours is a '99, so it will have a drain on the converter too assuming it has the 4R100.
 
"Shocking" a transmission with fresh ATF is absurd, A Friction/band is either worn or not. If a trans fails after a ATF change.....It was going to fail anyhow.
