Just got a brand new '15 GTI a few months ago. Getting close to 5k miles and I'm going to do my first oil change (I realize VW recommends every 10K). Found German made European formula Castrol Synthetic 0w40 at Walmart for $21.88 for 5 qts. The car comes 5w40. Any harm in going with the 0w40?

Check your local AutoZone. I picked up 11 five quart jugs for $10 each on clearance. Look at the thread in the Sales and Rebates sub-forum.

That Castrol is much better than what dealership uses (Castrol 5W40).
So, either that or M1 0W40.

Is 0w-40 becoming the 20w-50 of the 60's and 70's. In those years a lot of people ran 20w-50 in everything. Today someone told me he runs 0w-40 in everything.

I'd load up on that 0w40 Castrol at WM before the price goes back up.
It's supposed to be a very good oil (like M1 0w40)

It was and then they pull all Castrol Synthetic on Rollback. I myself picked up a couple jugs of the 0w40 last week. Not due for an oil change, but figured what the heck...

Look at the bottle for your current required spec. If it's certified then it's fine. If it's not certified then no,don't use it.
Vw is picky when it comes to oil.

There are a lot of VW 502.00 that are really not good, Castrol 5W40 being one of them.

High NOACK, shears very fast etc. Does not meet MB 229.5 only MB 229.3.
VW 502.00 is not very stringent specification, and 2.0TSi engine is very hard on oil. Besides VW 502.00 I would always look that oil carries MB 229.5 or MB 229.51.
Used that Castrol in 1.8T Passat. After 4K hidro lifters start to knock. After 4 OCI, I switched to Castrol 0W30 (back then GC) and ran it for 8K, never had that issue or with M1 0W40 or PU 5W40 when tried those oils in that engine.

There are different Castrol as well. Gold bottle is better than black bottle.

0W30 and 0W40 gold bottle Castrol meets MB 229.5 as well as VW 502 and 505.

Black bottle 0W30 and 0W40 meets same.
It s 5W40 Black bottle Made in USA that is substandard.
I think you are maybe getting some of the EU oils.

Define "best."

Also, the OP's car is under warranty.

I would like to know that too.
I was personally involved in testing of one oil (not on sale in the U.S.). Approval from VW for 504.00/507.00 was like 3000 euros. So my question is: Why Redline is not getting those approvals.
Amsoil got MB, BMW and probably will soon get VW.
So how come that "best" oil does not have any approval?
