changing cabin filters...

The ones I've changed aren't made to be washed, they're basically paper.

Besides, they get REALLY nasty.

The one in my GF's 2003 Toyota Highlander was actually replaceable media that fit in a plastic tray behind the glove box. Before I was able to get the real thing I cut a piece of washable A/C filter to fit into the tray. It worked just fine. Her current car, a Lexus IS250, has a similar configuration. The hog hair A/C filters won't trap particles as small as a real CAF, but they still might be good enough.

"Why not just wash them?", you asked.

While washing gets some of the dirt, the smaller particles of dirt remain.

The full spectrum of filtration is no longer there.

That is not to say a washed cabin air filter is useless. Kira

This is the stuff I was talking about. If you have a frame that accepts replacement media you can cut this to fit. If you want it to be more efficient, get a can of filter spray and spray it. It won't catch particles as small as some of the cabin air filters out there, but it will keep the evaporator clean and reduce dust.

Cut to fit

You can vacuum them if they're not too discolored. They're like 9 dollars though, so it makes more sense to just change them when your service schedule tells you to.
