I have several qts of Edge 0w40 and just got a 97 Explorer 4.0 sohc. I am going to try it and see how it does, does anyone have any experience with this oil in this motor?

Sounds like a decent combo since the Ford 4.0Ls called for 5w30, might be able to mix some 0w20 in if you find a good deal. But no biggie on the 0w40 IMO.

I've used RT6 5W-40 in a 2005 4.0 SOCH engine before and there was no difference versus the usual 5W-30.

Are you sure it's a SOHC? I thought the 4.0 in those years was an OHV.

Yes, keep in mind that engine can use a thinker oil. It has 4 timing chains that shear down the oil given change. One of the few engines Ford never back spec'd to a 5W20 oil
