Linseed oil would be a better choice for that application. Roll a bit on every day for a week, then weekly for a month, then monthly for a year, then annually. Be certain to treat all sides...You will never have to replace that wood again.
 
I use it to lubricate firearms...currently using a new bottle of Quaker State 10w-40 green bottle SN; in the recent past it would be whatever 10w-40 or 15w-40 I had leftover from motorcycle/scooter oil changes; got tired of buying expensive gun oils that are expensive and creep too much...
 
Used Oil (hey, that's me) Diesel fuel and that green copper stuff makes a good fence-post
preservative.
Soak the logs in a drum for a month or two and you have a 20 year post for free.
 
M1 is a great lubricant for stainless steel pistol slides.
