2006 Toyota Camry with 2AZ-FE, I'm going to rebuild it next weekend for my family, for the life of me, I can't find any information on getting the right socket to remove the headbolts

I have CTA tool from amazon that is 8mm and 10mm respectively that works on the 1zz-fe and the 2zz-ge engines perfectly, but it seems these head bolts socket size is different, where do I find it? any help would be appreciated

I think your dead on, I bought the fel-pro headbolts for replacement and the 10mm bi-hexagonal fits it just right, now only to see if the original head bolts are the same "head" size.

for the 1zz-fe: Beck/Arnley headbolts were 9mm which I didn't have the socket for so I ended up getting fel-pro and have always used them.

Do the bolt heads look like any of these?

the Toyota Tech had this

He wasn't very clear where he bought it from, but I remember him telling me it was 12mm or maybe not, this confuses me as the Fel-Pro head bolts are 10mm bi-hexagonal.

That's a tri-square.

Example from a Google search for the terms "socket tri square"

Yep - something about the threads getting fubared and people have to buy a new short block as a result. I think there are some aftermarket fixes available though.

I am wondering this too.

Yes, Time-Sert created a special kit just for the Toyota 2AZ-FE engine. Even if the thread bolt holes weren't damaged, I would still buy the Time-Sert kit, just so I wouldn't have to do the job twice.

I'm tearing down the engine for an oil consumption fix, it's oil return holes are clogged up badly, this is the 06 2AZ-FE in the Camry, the issue you guys are referring to was fixed in this model.

It sounds like the same problem GM had with the N*. In that case i would definitely do the job if i had to take the engine apart that far.
I thought i had run into one of these engines with studs, it must have been a conversion, which seems very common.

I never saw that head stud kit for Toyotas before. Looks like a good idea. I was used to seeing thread inserts that looked like Heli-coils, but were stronger, then normal head bolts would be installed.
