Sounds strange to me. I remember being told that the Saturn 1.9 DOHC engine had hydraulic buckets from 1991 to 1999, and got roller finger followers from 2000 to 2002.
I wonder what was done to this car. Some people would bolt a roller head to a flat lifter block without a problem, other times people would swap a roller lifter engine in an earlier Saturn just because they got an engine cheaply.
Also, have a look at the EGR valve. Sometimes they can hang open and cause the engine to get extra sooty.
