1. 2004 Subaru Outback, 3.0 H6 with 85,000 miles
2. Manual specifies: ILSAC GF-3 5w30 or 10w30
3. Central Virginia
4. I usually drive pretty easy. I get on it every once in awhile.
5. My daily commute is only 5 miles or about 15 minutes of stoplights. I may get up to 45mph. More city driving on the weekends with occasional highway travel.
6. No known issues with the car.
I recently purchased the car and absolutely love it. I am fanatical about maintainence and taking care of it. I have been working on taking care of all the routine preventative maintenance and have started to do a little research on lubricants.
Over the summer I used Mobil Super 10w30 and Subaru oil filters. I generally change at 4k since I consider all the city driving to be "harsh conditions". Honestly I picked the oil off gut feeling. I didn't do much research. I am thinking about using 5w30 over the winter to aid in protection for cold starts.
I would like to get some suggestions on which 5w30 oils might be good for this particular vehicle and conditions. And maybe some insight on whether a 4k OCI is appropriate.
I have been weary of using synthetic oil purely based on the lore that it will be more likely to weep and leak in older cars not designed to run them. I realize that this might not actually be the case and could be convinced to try one.
Thanks for all your help.
