I'm looking for an amplifier for my Audio-Technica M50x headphones in the ~$100 range. Source would be my PowerMac G5, but could also be a PC. The G5 has optical audio out as well. Any favorites here?

do you want a usb dac/amp or a 1/8 headphone input output type.

FiiO is a good name brand for this type of gear.

you have 38 ohm headphones so you dont need any "crazy" amp to push them.

the one I linked works best with upto 150ohm, and "ok" with 250ohm.

I wouldnt use it with 600 ohm headphones but you dont have those.

I use this with my desktop pc and like it a lot. I replaced an older soundblaster audigy sound card with a newer asus sound card and I didn't like the maximum volume I was getting with my sony mdr-v700 headphones. I got this based off the reviews, not knowing a whole lot about headphone amplifiers. It did exactly what I wanted to do, substantially increased headphone volume without hurting sound quality. No optical input though.
