In about 1982 a friend of mine handed me a bottle of 0W30 motor oil and I didn't know what to make of it. He said he was told it was very good oil but I thought it would be thin. I can't remember the brand, but it had a rather plain label. Could have been Esso of Petro Canada. I am pretty sure it wasn't Amsoil. Anyone know when the first 0W30 oils were available and the brands?

I remember Esso "Protec Ultra" 0w30 in the mid to late 80's. There was also a "Protec Extra" line as well but I don't remember if there was a 0 w as I didn't use it. I also remember being told by the bulk dealer that it was the same as XD3 0w30. It was supposedly relabelled because people were apprehensive to use it in a gas application. I used in a Ford EFI 302 if Memory serves me correctly. In the spring I was in a hurry to get it changed when it warmed up!! Boy times have changed!!!
