What about the driveshaft?

I bought a Dorman Rzeppa joint rebuild kit from AAP and it looks pretty straight forward. Came with a lifetime warranty too. Assuming the joint failed because the ripped boot allowed dirt and water in, what would the condition of the shaft be that goes into the joint? This area should also be protected by the boot.

From what I can tell, the only play is in the joint itself and not the connection between the shaft and the joint.

The shaft should be fine. It's just splines that slide into the joint. The boot is to keep the joint itself clean and to keep the grease in. Clean the splines well and inspect them is all that should be needed.
