Some of you may find interest a recent interview with the Chief Engineer of the 2.7L ecoboost on Autoline Afterhours:

http://www.autoline.tv/journal/?p=33929

There were some interesting points they discussed about the testing and design they must do for the engine to be able to withstand the Start/Stop technology. The number of start/stop tests they do >200,000 (if I remember correctly) for engine with start/stop vs 10,000 for a normal engine was amazing. They also make some points about when they designed this engine they also consider it will go into additional vehicles, not just the F150.

Interesting viewpoints between guests with completely different backgrounds. Sensible questions from the host and the Bloomberg rep but the guy from motor trend seemed to know nothing about automotive engineering and asked the most embarrassingly stupid questions. You could argue he's asked what consumers want to know but that translation is what marketing is for. Missed was the opportunity to ask about development details such as they designed the oil sealing despite thermal interaction between the block parts and how they isolated mains vibration.

Thanks for posting that, though!

I am aok with all the pro Ford posting about their publicized testing procedures but it should be noted that almost all mfgrs do them, and some are both more and less stringent than Ford.

Actually it is brilliant marketing to publicize them...
