Maybe for the Barrett

You may get a little muzzle brake "pull-off" effect.
It's frustrating until you figure out what exactly is happening
especially if you have never shot rifles with muzzle brakes before.

At 100 yards, the bullet likely has not "settled down" yet
so I would not worry too much over 100 yard groups.

One day I took my Sako 995 .338 LM to the range.
By the time everyone that just had to try it out did, I counted up the
brass and figured out that we went through $250.00 worth of ammo.

That said, there is an addictive quality to the .338 LM that most anything
smaller will not satisfy.

You may find it amusing but my .308 has a brake too (10 FCP-K) and for some reason the PO put one on my .223

LOL!

The .308 is deadly consistent at 100 and 200 yards. It is more accurate than I am.

And it begins!

Reloading for the Lapua
smile.gif

I spent $130 today to get everything I needed to reload 100 rounds, which would cost me $320.00 to buy

Going forward, it'll be about $75 for 100 rounds, which is pretty darn good!

^^ If you plan on using Varget for the 338 Laupa please don't, it burns too fast and could be dangerous. H-1000 or Retumbo are much better suited for the 338 Lapua.

What kind of press are you using?

RCBS.

And that's the first I heard of that. That powder is listed in that book for that round......

Trust me it burns too fast for a 338 Lapua.

RCBS Rock Chucker, great press!

OK, I looked it up and you are right, it is too fast for the 200gr bullets, it MIGHT work OK for something lighter but it is pushing it.

This is the chart I got from the Hodgdon site:

HodgdonLapua01.jpg

For this bullet, Lapua recommends N160 or 165, which the H4831 is right in-between. Your thoughts?

My buddy loads for the 338 Lapua, and uses Retumbo and a 250 grain SMK bullet. I think it's 96 grains with the 250 gr SMK bullet. The safe range for the Retumbo powder and the 250 SMK bullet is between 90-98 grains. As always check a reloading manual to be safe.

IMO a 200 grain bullet is a tad on the light side for the 338. What twist barrel do you have? His is a 10 twist barrel.

FTR I reload for the 30-338 Lapua.

You can get lighter than that, LOL! The lighter rounds are for hunting. They were inexpensive, so I figured I'd give them a shot (LOL!).

According to the Lapua chart:
http://www.lapua.com/upload/reloading/vihtavuorireloadingguideedition8.pdf

The Retumbo is equivalent to the N170, which they recommend for 225gr right up to 300gr. It is a slower powder than the 4831.

My rate of twist is 10 also BTW.

Half the fun of reloading is finding a load you like. Experiment, have fun, be safe, and enjoy shooting it. Let me know what you settle on!

Nice! I'm guessing you have the RCBS Rock Chucker press? I'm an RCBS guy myself, I think all green looks nice

I can confirm the Varget not being suitable for the .338 LM.

My .338 LM loads like the N170 best, and my .308 Win is boringly accurate with RL-15 (& MR2000 for the lighter loads).

Considering the price of LM brass a neck sizer would be a good investment.

If I could find 170, 570 or RL33 I'd buy it on the spot.

The best I could do in the last 2 years for magnum powders is

7828
USA 869
RL 25
Retumbo
H1000
Ram mag
H50BMG (un-opened)

If I added up all of those together I might have 3 lbs left.

hey overkill, can you pls breakdown the cost for 100 rounds,
I have been following your thread with great interest, always wanted a 338 lapua but cost of ammo kept me out of the game.

Thanks,

Sure!

The bullets, 100 were around $40.00
The primers were IIRC around $5.00 for 100
Powder (which I haven't re-purchased yet) is around $35.00.

So I guess that puts me at $80.00 rather than $75.00.

I have plenty of brass on-hand but that will eventually be a cost in the future.
