Replacing the heater core is a nightmare -- one of the most difficult repair jobs. You need to disassemble your entire dash, discharge the A/C and disconnect the A/C parts, and then put everything back and connect the A/C to a vacuum pump to evacuate it and then recharge it. So, basically it's a complete dash teardown plus an A/C job.
This said, I actually did it on my car and I managed to do it without disconnecting the A/C by some horrendous twisting and pulling. A/C needed repair anyway; so, I didn't worry about loosening some fitting and causing a leak. It took the whole day and it was very difficult.
