Looking for the best oil filter available for a friend in Rochester ny for his 2001 v6 Toyota Avalon he always used purolater or Toyota filters and wants to change to a filter that has in his words (less Drama) i told him Wix but figured i would ask here. Im pretty sure Toyota filters are tearolaters but not 100%
He will be running pennzoil 5w30 Syn Blend because it gets cold there.

He will be bringing it here for a timing belt in about 5000 miles

I think Wix is a solid recommendation.

I also wouldn't overlook 0W-30 M1 for the cold weather application.

At least as long as it's on sale for $22/jug.

Wix is a great filter, but the only place to get them by me is Napa, and Napa Golds are somewhat expensive.

The Purolator Synthetic doesn't have that drama, so if you're near a Kmart, you can get it for only $6.64.

Fram's Ultra is also very good despite sharing a brand name with the can of death.

Toyota OEM filters are NOT Tearolators; they are made by Denso in Thailand.

I would go for Fram ultra. Great filtration, flow rate, and good for 15k miles.

Even if you don't go remotely that long they are still a great filter. Dual media and metal mesh.

Also at $8 (for my car) its a very reasonable price

Wix is a great filter, so are M1 and the Fram ultra.
If I may offer a suggestion; The 2001 Avalon is also approved for 5w20 and 0w20, if he's running the 5w30 due to the winter, he'd be better served with an 0w20 synthetic like TGMO or M1 Afe that have much improved cold flow specs over 5w30.

Yeah, obviously those twice daily cold starts were killing my 1MZ-FE (see analysis above) with 5w-30.

Do you own a 1MZ-FE equipped vehicle?
Can you provide us with oil analysis results from said vehicle running the 0w-20 you recommend?

Look, that silly Canada application chart you're pulling information from has been trotted out time and again here. Know what it actually says for an '01 Avalon?

0w-20 ONLY
0w-20 or 5w-20
5w-30 ONLY

Think about the idiocy of that for a moment...

If the OP wants actual revelant information, contact Toyota customer service and they'll give you the straight scoop on what's recommended (spoiler: it doesn't align with what's in that chart).

The Napa Platinum has the media to go 15k miles, but an inferior bypass valve/combo valve compared to the Ultra. 50% efficiency @ 20 microns Wix, 99% Efficiency @ 20 microns Ultra.

Oh I'm definitely thinking about the idiocy.

The Napa Platinum (WIX XP) uses a combo bypass/ADBV? I thought those were only used on their lower tier filters.

Wife has a 2001 Avalon. Engine is one that has known sludge problems. I only use full synthetic oil in it, 5w-30, hence will have no sludge problem. Bought Toyota filters at an online Toyota dealer. Filters were made by Denso, heavy when picked up and nicely sealed with plastic at filter open end, which both put a smile on my face. Cost was about $4.00 apiece.
I'm one of many who dump Purolator as a future choice. It use to be my filter of choice.

Wife puts only 4500 miles yearly, so only due a yearly change.

Well myself being from Rochester, doesn't necessarily qualify me as an oil filter specialist but let me say HELLO!

All of the filters offered here, from FRAM Ultra, Mobil 1, WIX/NAPA, etc., are all good filters. Puro's have been controversial lately as has been mentioned recently.

I also believe that the Toyota filters are good filters especially from the Lexus Dealership(DENSO Filters) specifically made for 1MZFE LEXUS engines. IDK the part#.

These Lexus filters in my experience are slightly different that the TOYOTA Filter for the same engine. Different in the filtration media as the Toyota filter may be pleated paper or whatever. Can't answer for the ADBV on the Toyota filter but, the Lexus version is Orange Silicone.

But anywaaaaay! Your friend should be able to pick a filter of the ones mentioned here by our members and be very happy with any of them especially if he doesn't like the way Purolator's are being made and their tearing issues.

Walmart has the best "everyday" prices on FRAM Ultra #3614.
We also have Advance Auto Parts, AutoZone, Car Quest, NAPA, Pep Boy's etc.

So, finding a good filter will be easy. Take your/his pick!

I am still running out my stash of PureONEs' for the Lexus in my signature with same 1MZFE engine. I've cut them open after each OCI and they've been fine but, I did buy a stash of P1's before the tearing and poor(er) quality issues.

Presuming a "normal" O/FCI plan is the intent, there are many good filters to choose from. There is no reason to spend lots of money; it won't pay back for normal OCIs.

There is no "best" filter that is going to be recommended; there are many good ones.
