Oh I don't think they LOOK good, either.
They FEEL better than a hard plastic thin steering wheel (Elantra) and a bit warmer to touch in winter AND a bit cooler in summer somehow. The fact that it makes the wheel a lot grippier and thicker, thus more comfortable makes a HUGE difference in the Elantra.
In the E46, it's mostly to reduce a bit of wear and tear. (The cover is not too tight, and i remove and clean it periodically, and the leather still looks great underneath). It also provides me with a bit of insulation in hot/cold weather than the leather.
