Could be compression loss due to sticking rings on 1 or more cylinders. Do you have tools to do a compression test? Do a cold, dry, morning compression test & see what your readings are, and if they're low, then do a wet test & see if they increase.

DO you have any stored codes (by key trick NOT scanner), IIRC the key trick works on the 2nd gen ZJ's. Either displays on odometer or the CEL blinks a specific number of times that dictates a DTC.

i've never been able to get key trick to work

"on-off-on-off-on" (IIRC)
make sure your not going all the way to start, or back past off. If it does not work start your engine in between try's.

Nah. I've hit red line on mine and its fine.

If it blows then you just build a 4.6L stroker haha.

Key trick works on a 97 ZJ, but you have to wait about 10 seconds after doing the "on-off-on-off-on" trick before it'll start to show anything.
