Honda V6 valve clearnace inspection

I had a 04 pilot that had -20% fuel trims and the exhaust valves had only 1 or 2 thousandths clearance. had almost 200k miles though. never was adjusted.

what is the theory behind tight valves and rich fuel trim condition? Does the tight valve imply valves are opened little longer than normal? If so, I would think more air is going in the engine? I am confused now!

the valves will stay open slightly, causing incomplete combustion, leaving excess fuel in the exhaust, which the 02 sensor will read as a rich condition. The valves will eventually burn and require replacement if left like this too long.

It goes for any valve. However, the intakes will not tighten over time. They will become loose. You will have the exhaust valves that become tight due to valve seat recession.

No. Honda EX without VCM.

I would have said to do it around now if you had VCM but non VCM you will have no issue.

Matt I appreciate your help, and have a final question, please:

Did you mean "no issue" in waiting for the 105K service, or did you mean "no issue at any time", meaning with my non-VCM engine I won't ever need them adjusted? Thanks.

I think you misunderstood what i said regarding a couple of thousands.
I can see those kinds of fuel trim with only a couple of thousand clearance but what i meant was from say .020 mm to .018mm just beginning to get tight not almost no clearance at all.
Fuel trims and valves that tight should trigger trigger a CEL.

i know what you meant sorry to confuse. The car did set a PO172 and the tight valves was the cause.

Get them adjusted at regular maintenance schedule.

It has come upon the A14 service which has a blurb about inspect valve clearance. I am doing a little price shopping as this particular service is over $400 at dealer. The service guy said most but not all of the time they are within spec but still have to pull the manifold, valve cover off to access the valves.

A few questions.

1) Risky not to do it? I only plan on another 50k in this vehicle and moving on.

2) Any reason to have a Honda/Acura specialist or dealer tech do it or any competent mechanic can perform it? I have an incredible Subaru indy tech (20 years wrenching) who does all. Just not sure up his ally or not. His rate is only $60/hr instead of $105/hr at dealer.

since somebody else bumped it, I might as well ask as to what happened with your MDX. Did you have this service done? Has your engine blown up yet? :)
