Forgive me for pointing out the obvious here but wouldn't it be easier to carry oil with you and check your oil before a long journey?
This is basic, 101 motoring practice here.
I'm going on a long journey so I need to....
check lights and levels
check tyres and pressures
check I have spare oil
check I have enough booze and drugs for the journey, and so on...
