I just finished this book, and would recommend it to almost any car enthusiast. The full title is Auto Biography: A Classic Car, an Outlaw Motorhead, and 57 Years of the American Dream.

It is well-written, interesting, and actually suspenseful. It weaves together the stories of a '57 Chevy wagon and all of its owners, along with the rise of the suburbs and car culture, planned obsolescence, the recent financial crash, and auto restoration.

The automotive details are accurate enough to keep a car guy interested, and probably elementary enough that they would make sense to a general reader. One caveat: if you are offended by what the author calls "rough language," this probably isn't the book for you. (The BITOG censor would make about 95% of the dialogue unintelligible.)
