I believe they are stainless steel, don't rust, but now have many very shiny spots on many of the blades after years of use. Can I still trust them to give me accurate readings, especially the thinner blades?

They wear out...rubbing them between stuff makes them thinner, always.

Usually not a biggie, but on the stuff I play with on weekdays, we get calibrated shim strip...home use, YMMV depending on what you want to use.

I can tell you for certain they do in a machine shop. I've not worn mine out, but I don't use them everyday either.

My BIL does...

If the micrometer reading does not match with the feeler gauge stamping, which one do you trust more?

Again, it's a "rubbing" problem with micrometers...they have a ratchet for a reason.

If you are measuring a feeler gauge (say) with a micrometer, some people "clamp" the feeler with the micrometer, then slide it up and down, wearing both.

Supposed to unclamp, reposition, then wind back down with the ratchet to where the next measurement is taken...no sliding, no sliding wear.

Always use the ratchet to minimise wear on the loaded face of the threads.

Losing a zero on a micrometer is adjustable with the wrench provided.

A micrometer can be zeroed out to account for wear; feeler gauges can't.
