First, it was the well known Target credit card exploit that damaged Target: http://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/skilled-cheap-russian-hackers-power-american-cybercrime-n22371

Second, US banks were recently compromised by well organized and disciplined hackers, supported by a major state: http://www.nbcnews.com/tech/security/fbi...s-banks-n190671

Third, the recent HD credit card compromise that dwarfs the previous Target exploits: http://www.freep.com/article/20140902/BUSINESS07/309020163/home-depot-credit-cards-hack

This is the interesting tidbit:

Quote:
"This latest batch of cards is for sale from the same underground store that sold cards from P.F. Chang's and Target," said Trey Ford, a security strategist at Rapid7, a Boston-based computer security company.

Home Depot spokeswoman Paula Drake said she could only "confirm that we're looking into some unusual activity and we are working with our banking partners and law enforcement to investigate."

The data put up for sale was labeled "American Sanctions."

Krebs called the naming "what can only be interpreted as intended retribution for U.S. and European sanctions against Russia for its aggressive actions in Ukraine."

Stolen information from cards issued by European banks that were used in Home Depot stores was sold separately and labeled "European Sanctions." Krebs reported.

I remember some here posted that the economic sanctions would stop Putin guess not just like economic sanctions provoked imperial Japan into escalations into war against the United States.

Sanctions are just not very effective or efficient. Cuba has had U.S. sanctions against it for nearly 45 years and the desired outcome has not come to fruition.

Either you take action or you see, speak, or hear no evil.

I heard a little about the Home Depot problem this AM. Wow............so our government (who I expect very little of, actually) should at least slow the international attacks. But they ain't got time for dat.

Yeah all talk, all mirrors, all smoke 24/7.

I see a scenario developing where corporations quit relying on incompetent government enforcement agencies who are only good at talking and spinning the facts, and begin to covertly employ their own mercenary strike forces to identify (cyber mercs online) and neutralize hackers (boots-on-the-ground mercs, think Jason Bourne...)

Just remember private industry does everything better, employing the cheapest best defenses available to protect the bottom line protect their customer's data.

The best way to avoid unwanted intrusion by "others" is to show you can do a task effectively.

It's not like the US ever hacked or eavesdropped on anyone...just ask Angela Merkel.

Cuba was made ineffectual and inconsequential, right?

Turns out Germany has been spying on the USA as well. Countries spying on other countries? Nah, never.

Before all this Target people were hired several times by different government agencies to help with computer and Internet security. I don't think this has been reported but their people were considered experts in the field. The only way to protect you own finances is to try to repair the problems after they happen or reduce your use and presence in these system. Your money can not be taken if it's not there. The real message might be that electronic money is risky business.

What effect did Cuba ever have unless it was propped by American Business?

Interesting warning on this way back in April 2014. Probably neglected back then.

Quote:
Former U.S. security officials warned on Tuesday that Russia may use cyber warfare against the U.S. and Ukraine if tensions between the two sides continue to escalate.

“If we move to the heavy sanctions, the sectoral sanctions ... the Russians are going to strike back in some way,” said former U.S. counterterrorism czar Richard Clarke, who spoke on a panel about cybersecurity at the Milken Institute Global Conference in Beverly Hills, California.

“[Russians] can’t strike back … [with] economic sanctions that would have the same kind of effect. What they can do … is a cyberattack to get back at us … attacking our financial institutions in ways that we’ll never be able to prove it was them but we’ll suffer the pain.”

Former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, who also spoke on the panel, said the U.S. should work with Ukraine to prepare a defense against this potential cyberattack.

“We’ve seen [Russia] use [cyber warfare] in Georgia. We’ve seen some elements of that being used in Crimea,” Panetta said. “If [Russia] has an attack plan, a cyber element is very much a part of that attack plan. It takes down communications, takes down missile systems, takes down the counter attack…”

Panetta went on to call cyberattacks the "battleground of the future," and said that Russia is second only to the U.S. in its cyber capability.

“The sophistication of what’s being developed today has the ability to create a lot of [censored],” Panetta said. “[Our] adversaries are looking at computer systems that run our electrical grid … chemical systems … water systems … transportation systems … financial systems.”

Basically, the country can be remotely paralyzed. This is how the next world war will be fought.
