$3,000 too much. It's a parts car at this point.

Getting better. If the only thing wrong is the turbo, it may not be that bad.

I still wonder if this is a dealer you can trust.

Is the mileage well documented? CarFax. (Can't see the entire thread now that I'm replying. Do you have a trusted friend/mechanic that could go over the car as an objective 2nd opinion. That way, you are blinded by the prospect of a new car.

Carfax looks great. I may go back and look at it again today.

Once again, the principle of people wanting only the advice that they are looking for applies here.

OP, what a fantastic deal you are getting from the dealer!!!

Often cat failure happens first, then the excess backpressure destroys the turbo. How a cat could be destroyed in 45,000 miles suggest something really bad happened.

Looks as if I can get this car now for $2,400, including inspection, taxes and tags.

I'm not really sure it's worth much more than $2,400 without a bad turbo, in perfect shape. There's no reason a turbo should die in 45k miles unless the car has never had an oil change.

I have my suspicions, too. But I've researched and called around a good amount in order to [censored] the risks. I recognize that I'm rolling the dice.

Just one question: Why?

If you want to gamble, go to a casino. Losing there is at least entertaining.

There are thousands of good used cars out there. Why gamble thousands on this Pandora's box?

It's a good question. I live in the Washington, DC metro area, and I actually find it difficult to find decent used cars here. The prices are high, and everything I look at seems to have its problems.

I guess I'm interested here in the ability of putting in an better turbo and gaining 40hp or so.

I actually talked to Eric. He was great and helped me make my decision.

I decided not to get the car and move on.

Excellent, they are the best. Did you call before or after my suggestion?
