Comments:
This is another nice report here. It's better than last time, in fact, when you consider the longer oil
run and lower metal readings with this sample. That equates to an engine that's wearing better than it was,
which is nice. We thought metals were fine last time, so that makes this report exceptional. No
contamination was found. The viscosity was fine, and insolubles read nice and low at just a trace. The TBN
read 3.7, which is fine since 1.0 or less is considered low. A longer oil run should work out all right. Try for
up to 8,000 miles for the next oil. Nice report.

Only 2013+ Legacy uses 0w20

I thought 0w20 started earlier...my mistake.

Correction: Looks great!

Do you have a comparison uoa with other oils?

With a report like that I'd go to at least 8k if your running this motul 5w-30 again. Looks great. Wouldn't be surprised if it could go to 9-10k.

What filter are you running, that may be a limiting factor for you?

Subaru Blue OEM.

Top mount filter, right? I'd be tempted to change the filter halfway and run it out to 10k...

2012 was the last year for the timing belt driven EJs in the outback, so this one was definitely the bottom exhaust ring of fire oil filter location.

Totally on the bottom.

Should have read back to the first post, EJ series, of course it's on the bottom. With out an under tray, it's pretty easy to pop a new filter I there anyway. Not as clean/quick as the new FB top mounts of course, but not an all day job.

The Honeywell Subaru filters don't carry a mileage rating that I know of. The max specified oci by Subaru that I'm aware of is 7500 miles. So I'm assuming that's probably the upper limit to be on the safe side. I wouldn't run one over that. Personally I wouldn't run one at all. But I have a stack of subaru roki black filters

The Honeywell filters are pretty cheap, and I doubt you'd ever have an issue running one for 5k. If I were in our situation, that's what I'd do.

I do, and I should have just posted them both in the beginning. I included the OP UOA side by side for comparison.

These comments are from the first UOA:

Comments (Havoline, 05/05/14): About 1/2 quart low? That's not too bad after a 5,031-mile oil run.
Universal averages show typical wear for this type of Subaru engine after about 5,000 miles of oil use, so
it's nice to see your wear metals at similar levels. That shows your engine's internal parts are wearing
normally and are free of mechanical problems. You'll notice sodium was a bit high, but that's probably
residual additive from the previous fill. The TBN was strong at 3.0, so there's enough active additive to try a
longer run. Go up to 7,000 miles next. Nice first report!
