I don't shop at home depot anymore because they try to force customers to use self check out.
Lowe's is much better.
A walmart manager tried to get me and two other customers to move over to self check out, no one would go. Manager walked away in a huff.

I use self checkout at both stores with no problems, life can be a "B" sometimes eh linkbelt!

I have not ventured into one of those things in many years; but my neighbour reports that here in Windsor the Wal Mart has no self checkout. Same with another one in a small town 45 minutes from here.

EDIT: Apparently they do exist:

In Googling that I came across more than one article about how fast big retailers are ditching self checkout in the U.S.

Bad logic there.

In order for machines to be profitable, it has to replace more labor cost with less labor cost. It is also unlikely that the replaced labor are the same people (the surplus you stated).

What usually happens, is the society needs more new labors in a different field (i.e. engineers) and let the old labors (i.e. cashiers) gradually retire (i.e. fewer or no new people entering the field). They may not be in the same area or the same nation.

It is inevitable in any place that has high labor cost, like the US. Unless you are willing to move to Mexico or China and work low cost labor while cramping 4 people in a 2 bedroom apartment, you just have to accept automation + self service will replace a lot of human.

I avoid our WMs quite a bit, but sometimes I get tempted by one thing or another. My main experience with the self checkouts are at Home Depot, Superstore, and Canadian Tire. Superstore's system seems to be quite robust and quick.

They tried them for about a month around here and got rid of them, replaced them with express lanes

LOL. I find "life" to be quite a lot of fun. Being retired, I have the time to avoid the "so called" time savers such as self checkout. I am quite amused at store managers, etc who get their panties in a wad when they find they cannot control a customers method of check out. They should save their "instructions" for people who are on their payroll. That ain't me!

Walmart's managers must not have learned Sam's procedures yet. When things aren't going well at Sam's, managers are taught to hide. They even moved the little manager cart to way way off to the side and behind some stuff in the unlikely event a manager was there when people were languishing in 8 deep lines.

I love self checkout. I don't have to deal with the idiots behind the cash register, I never have to stand in line, and I'm out of there faster than any cashier could ever ring me out.

Agreed.

I tend to use the self checkout for many of the same reasons; the biggest one being that I'm not stuck behind the person who is surprised when the final total is given to them and they now realize that they have to find their checkbook and write a check. Oh, you need ID? Let me find that. Do you have a pen?
etc.

The only time I regret doing so is when it's 10AM on a Saturday and Ma & Pa Kettle decide that, dadgummit, today's the day that they're going to learn this newfangled scanning machine.

I am a night owl. I sometimes go to Wal-mart, spend about $200 on groceries for the week and do my shopping at night, since I'm up anyways.

About a month ago, I went to Wal-Mart at about 1AM, spent about 90 minutes in the store loading up my cart with groceries and household good items. The cart was packed to the top. I went to the front of the store to checkout and found that there wasn't a single cashier on the lanes. They ALWAYS have at least one cashier on the lanes late at night, so I thought this was odd. They only had the six self checkout lanes open which was attended by a clerk that kept running from one malfunctioning machine to the next.

I asked the clerk if there were any cashiers available and she said no, they only had self checkout available. I advised her that I was not going to check myself out with 100 plus items, that would simply take forever. I advised her that if Wal-Mart was too cheap to have at least ONE cashier available for me to checkout, I would spend my $200 elsewhere. I left my fully loaded cart at the self checkout counter and left the store empty handed.

When I got home I contacted Wal-Mart corporate office and told them how they lost a sale due to the lack of a single cashier willing to help me. They don't care though.

I am not sure which grocery supermarket is open in your area at 0010 hours though. Walmart has you by your family jewels.

In all honesty I don't think you would have been any slower than your average Wal-Mart cashier. Many of the ones I've encountered appear to be mentally challenged.

I hate self checkout with a full cart. I don't mind if I just have 5 or 10 items. They should offer me a discount for me doing the work.

Humor aside....I've seen a few folks that sadly have this condition but are gainfully employed. Often times the nicest people you'll ever meet. Many do indeed perform certain jobs BETTER than some "normal" employees.

Dunno about that... the wife's cousin is on disability, and about the only thing anyone can ascertain to be wrong with him is that he doesn't want to work.

Okay, maybe it's that he's stoned, but I don't think that's a legit disability claim, either...
