How much of a sealer is primer? Do I need to put real paint over it, or can I call it a day if I don't care? I put some self etching primer on the hood, am tempted to just paint the whole hood to match, but not sure if I need to paint afterwards.

That's what I'm guessing, but I see it, time to time. Tempted to run it, not like I've got years left on this car.

Primer is porous it seals nothing. Use a self etching primer first with 2 or 3 good coats then prime over it. Its not a great sealer but better than primer alone.

metal that is just primered will rust very quickly, as it seems that moisture goes right through it. Of course if it has other paint under it, that is different, but bare metal will rust if left in the weather with only primer. Those that you see may be flat black paint, not primer.

Nope, neighbor has a VW caddy that has been primer gray for the last year plus. Seems ok. Seen other cars in primer gray too, but who knows, could be just primer over paint for a look.

I did use a self etching primer. Albeit from HF. Laid it on thick too.
