okay today I changed my transfer case oil in my Jeep grand Cherokee 07 CRD

I have been getting a service 4wd on the screen

I replaced the front and rear diff electronic actuators as well as harnesses pulled the covers washed the diffs out and then filled with redline shockproof heavy so far so good

Its been a couple months and I started to get the same notice again on the screen

I took it to the dealer and he said the clutch in the transfer case was engaging to far

I decided to change the transfer case fluid first as the forums say change it every 40,000k,s its done 70,000k,s

The book does not say that and neither does the dealer after changing the oil I noticed it had ATF fluid in it and that its supposed to have a different type of oil in the transfer case so rather than stuff around I filled it with genuine Mopar oil

the ATF that came out was full of what looks like clutch particles so I am not happy

After speaking to a transmission specialist he recommended driving it for a while

I am going on holidays with it about 4 thousand K,s he said when I come back drop the oil and put it in a white container and see what's in it we can go from there needless to say not impressed with this I hear from some circles to use Mobil tractor oil or CVT transmission oil in it I would like some opinions on that

Also how much damage have I done with the incorrect oil

I've read the post 3 times really slowly. Hard for me to make much sense of this.

Slow down buddy. Use periods. Can you clearly state what you did and what you saw in a chronological order?

Seems he serviced the 4x4 system, including taking covers off and flushing them clean, and then filled the t-case with what (as best I can tell at this point) might have been the "wrong" fluid.

If it is a chain-driven transfer case, which calls for ATF, and you used some other oil, it's probably not trashed. At least not the mechanical part. But I'll be the first to admit that I'm not totally up on all the variants of 4x4 systems JEEP uses. If there are clutches in the t-case, and you used the incorrect fluid, I cannot profess what might be wrong now, after the fact.

First and foremost, the owner's manual will often tell what fluid and how much. FSMs are even more detailed. Did you not seek that info source first?

It appears that the OP replaced the dealer installed ATF from the transfer case with OE fluid. He suspects that the transfer case has been damaged by the ATF.

It could be that the fluid had nothing to do with the clutches going, but improper transfer case shifter might have caused slipping and clutch wear.

I know this post is a bit old
I had basically given up on the Jeep transfer case no one here locally here in Australia knows how to fix them except the dealer and after he quoted me 5 grand I thought the bugger can die for that

2 weeks ago I stumbled across a new independent Jeep guy funny thing he just moved into my Audi guys old shop

A bit of luck anyway he diagnosed the problem I need new clutches in the transfer case seems they are going past the lock point and the transfer case cant engage the front diff so throws a light ding dong and code

I have ordered the parts and will be using the Mobil 424 this time

I still think the ATF destroyed the clutches when I dropped the ATF it looked like it had snow in it the old oil smelt terrible as well
looking forward to being code free in 5 years of Jeep ownership
