Well, if it were open source, that's exactly what would happen. That happens with all kinds of open source software, including the Linux kernel. Sometimes, people create something useful and want to share it, rather than sell it. If it wasn't for that spirit, the home computing industry would have died in its infancy.
 
I don't know, Garak. Sounds like we know the difference between you and Bill Gates. And the difference between you and Steve Jobs.

Really, though, I honestly wouldn't be surprised in the least if either of them wrote some form of freeware early in their computing careers. Sometimes, in the day, you wrote what you needed and shared it with friends.
 
The people who write under an open source license do not worship the almighty dollar. They're just interested in helping people, and it's a hobby to them.

That's the big difference here.
 
I think Redhat makes a lot in support. And the guy behind Ubuntu is a very wealthy man. And Canonical certainly is getting a lot of funding from somewhere.
