BMW are having big problems with oil leaks (according to a tech that used to work at our place and is now a BMW tech), I wonder if that has something to do with the change?

Interesting note: With the BMW 5w-30 (Castrol product) in the sump my valve cover gaskets on the M5 leaked. I was thinking I had to replace them. As soon as I started running M1 0w-40, the leak stopped and hasn't returned shrug That has been a few years now.

The same thing happend when i changed from some HDEO to Mobil Super 3000x1 on wife's Punto. This car have gasket between head and cam deckel and is major pain to change it. Mobil stop the leak completely.

It's not beyond the realm of possibility. He said literally every car that comes in for a service that's about 3-4 years or older he's guaranteed to find oil leaks.

Naw. Gasket leaks are common for BMW'S. Especially valve cover and where the oil filter housing is attached to the block. I think it's the choice of material. Who knows... I think the leak around the oil filter housing is a result of over tightening the oil filter cap.

This is my understanding as well. The materials they use become brittle over time and when subject to heat cycling, they eventually give in, much sooner than you'd expect them to.

It is butyl rubber IIRC, at least for the VCG's. Ford uses Silcone gaskets and you know, they don't have VCG leaking problems smirk I've mentioned this in the past on a discussion about it.

Similar thing with the VANOS piston o-rings that get hard and stop sealing, the only car not affected by the problem was the M5 (conveniently) that had upgraded VITON seals factory.

BMW does some weird things. Gasket/seal material choice is one of those things.

This is true, on friends late e46 rubber around windshield deteriorated heavily. Not cool for garaged premium German car.

Not sure, but i never saw window gaskets in such a poor condition on a newer car. Maybe from some car wash chemicals? Just gueesing really, but headlamps plastic cover deteriorates quickly on some cars also when washed in automated car wash.
