Exactly, as this is an area of intense research and innovation. I am a big believer in new tech and my thoughts are that when we need something technology becomes available.

The first CVT's in a cars back in the 1950's had a button on the dashboard that would enable engine braking.
I can't see adding the feature to modern cars being a problem.
I wonder what the cost/saving (to a manufacturer) is for a CVT over a 8 speed Automatic?
