Just picked this car up a couple of days ago. The car is an import from Japan and I haven't been able to find too much information on the 3S-GE BEAMS motor. I live in Canada so the weather goes from -30c to +30c. Looking for an engine oil recommendation (I think manual calls for 5w30) and also Diff / MTF recommendations.

I have a bunch of GC 0w-30 kicking around that I was thinking of putting in - any issues with that?

Thanks

The rear differential probably had SAE 90 GL-5, and just about any synthetic 75w90 GL-5 is an upgrade. I suggest buying the type that already has limited slip additive in it. You might not know if your car has one or not.

I pulled the manual out of the car, it's in Japanese but it recommends 10w-30. I'm pretty sure I've heard 5w-30 also recommended, thus I'm guessing the GC should be OK?

The GC is perfect for your engine, use it up!

You do have an LSD on the Z models.

Transmission oil
Toyota genuine MG gear oil special II (API GL-3 and SAE75W-90)

6 speeds MT 1.95 L 70W90/GL3

Diff. oil
The Toyota genuine hypoid gear oil SX (API GL-5 and SAE85W-90)
LSD 1.00 L 85W90/GL5

Those are factory recommendations. I would use Redline 75w90 in the MTL. (You need just under 2 quarts)

Here is a 75w90 GL5 diff oil with LSD additive already in. (You need just under 1 quart)

Guess not exactly, engines are not the same...

We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming...

artificialist the OE LSD is a Torsen type so don't require friction modifiers

Hi tawheed - After researching your vehicle, we found that your OEM called for an API SJ quality 5W30 engine oil back in 1998. Considering that the current API SN category is backwards compatible and serviceable with regard to the previous API SJ category, we would recommend that you stay with a 5W30 engine oil with an API SN rating – something like our Pennzoil Conventional 5W30 engine oil.

Now, with regard to the “GC 0W30” oil that you have kicking, we would recommend that you stay with your OEM recommended viscosity grade of 5W30. However, theoretically the 0W30 would still have the 30 weight viscosity at operating temperature, but would have a lower 0 weight viscosity at colder (“winter rating”) temperatures. So, theoretically this 0W30 product could provide a bit more oil fluidity at start up in colder conditions (for quicker flow of the oil to the top end of your engine). However, using this oil would also depend on how old it is, and how it has been stored. Our general rule of thumb is that you should not use an oil that is 4 years old (or older) - and that’s provided the oil container hasn’t been opened, and has been stored properly, etc. So, if your GC 0W30 product has been kicking around for something even close to four years, I would hesitate using it at this point. - The Pennzoil Team
