What are your reasons to go from 0-40 to 5-30?.

In my father's BMW 330XD, they had been putting Castrol Edge 5-30, last week it reached 160.000 km, the mechanic recommended moving up to Motul 5-40 (also fully synthetic LL04 like the Castrol) as he thought 5-30 was starting to be too thin for this engine and mileage.

I was a bit reluctant to do so, for the reason posted before, but now it's done, so I guess we won't go back to the 5-30. Maybe Mobil 1 0-40 would be a better option for the winter, that's why I'm interested in why you want to change it with 5-30.

Regards.

Most 5w30s are thinner than most 0w40s except in extreme cold. So I'll get even better winter starts (range of -20C to 5C), plus some MPG gain. A tad more HP too.

Yes, I always heard that, but, is it really noticeable?. I have to ask my father if he notices any MPG decrease after a while using the 5-40 compared with the 5-30.

Are there any figures, like the average MPG gain from 5-40 to 5-30 is X%, and so on?

Would it be any MPG by going from 5-40 to 0-40?. In theory the hot viscosity is the same, but maybe it's not in reality.

I don't know if there's any set % going from 0/5w40 to 5w30, might depend on the engine.

A Euro 0w40 and Euro 5w40 should have similar visco except for extreme cold, so I would not expect much difference.

Hm, according to the widman graph, both the Mobil 1 and Redline 0w40s are thinner than Redline 5w30 from -20C to -10C (or to 0, can't remember). I know the calculations can be iffy below freezing, but is it possible that's true?

This spec's out to almost exactly Shell Rotella T6

and that makes The Rotella T6 MBenz diesel engine 228.51 approved

although it isn't specifically approved for that engine

thanks I have been looking all over for this spec

Not at all, totally different spec, many differences.

Post them ............

Now you are just trolling

My my, such invective.
Let's see: a difference of 400ppm in phosphorus.
A different OM441 specification
A different OM602 specification
A different OM364A/LA specification
Substantial differences, unless one subscribes to the theory "all oils are the same"
In which case there's not very much to talk about on this forum.

400ppm in phosphorus

you do realize you are talking 400 parts per million .

That equates to zero minus nothing in the real world .

400
1,000,000

here is a graph
400 ppm

here is 1,000,000

I am talking about a ratio of phosphorus of 1.5:1, which is not "nothing".
I am also talking about 15 different measurements on 4 "real world" engine tests which are different between the 2 oil types.
That is also not "nothing".
