I thought that I would share the results of the last oil change on my Civic. The oil used was 3 qts of 5W-20 Pennzoil Platinum and 1 qt of 0W-20 Subaru branded Idemitsu SM that I had on hand. The Maintenance Minder was at 15% oil life remaining when changed. The previous fill was 100% Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20 for comparison.

I decided to use 5W-20 as opposed to 0W-20 as I don't think that there is a significant advantage to using the later in a climate where it rarely drops below freezing and is often quite hot. It would be good if the higher Viscosity Index were the result of a better base oil, but perhaps not so good if it is the result of a higher percentage of VI Improver in the mix.

This is the last oil analysis that I plan to perform on this car as the results appear acceptable to me, and I used my last Blackstone sample kit.

Cheers,
Jeff

I apologize for the lack of spacing in the table, but I couldn't resolve it before the post as locked and I could no longer edit it.

The Toyota 0w-20 gave you lots more wear metals.

The PP/Oil Filters lowered your Insolubles. Which Oil Filters did you use?

I'd stay with PP.

Clearly the TGMO run was an issue with the engine, not the lubricant, as TGMO is the best that there is, and the only time that it doesn't looks so, there's another factor (the engine) at work...

Nice series of tests, and I concur with your conclusions.

Turk, Honda A02 Filters were used, except a Purolator Pure1 was used with the first fill of Pennzoil Platinum.

I don't know why people keep repeating the myth that Honda engines are "easy on oil". This R18 sheared the oil from ~8.5 cst to under 7 cst after 7.5k miles on PP which is considered a top shelf synthetic.

While the TBN remained strong probably due a lot of highway trips, the oil took a hard physical beating to shear so much especially with no trace of water and minimal fuel dilution.

A less stout oil like bulk dino 5w20 would've probably sheared out of grade after 5k miles and caused excessive engine wear if ran to 0% OLM.
