Guy I work with has a 2007 Cobra kit car with a 351 Windsor bored and stroked to a 393. Car has 3700 miles with 475 HP and 525 TQ at the crank and he has no plans on tracking the car. Sunday driver that sees occasional spirited driving but not for long periods. Builder claims he can (not he must) use 20W-50 but the more important thing, per the builder, is that he uses a high zinc content oil. His current fill is Valvoline VR1 Syn in 20W-50 but is looking for other options cost wise. Says he is spending about $10.00 a qt. Maybe a thicker 10W-40? Thanks in advance.

All that money invested, but he can't afford to pay $10/quart of oil, that he's probably only changing once a year?

Frankly a good Dino (10w40) with a zinc additive (edelbrock) would do. My personal vote would be Castrol/M1 0w40, RT6 or Delo Syn 5w40.

Is this Q asked 2x a day NOW? You should post in the racing forum - a built 351W is not necessarily a low/mid saps PCMO candidate.
Everone ignores my suggestion to use a 4T motorbike or ATV oil. Why? High ZDDP and its rated typically the API (obsolete) SH/SJ. It will be low moly though. I know, you cant put oil in a car that has a picture of a motorcycle on the bottle

Too bad.

Any ACEA A3 B4 /SL in a grade 30 or 40 should do depending on how loose the motor was built.

example: Valvoline ATV motor oil:

Pennzoil Racing 25W50 has a ton of zinc. Cheap, too. Same price as their other conventional oils.

Too bad.

I wonder how those would work as breakin lubes, too.

Amsoil Z-Rod and JGR Driven oils have high zinc, and they also have a higher concentration of additives that fight corrosion while the car is in storage.
