It had been nearly 70,000 miles since my last fluid change on the Sienna, so I decided to do a pan drop and see how things looked. Not much to see really, a bit of clutch goop on the bottom of the pan and some fine ferrous material on the magnets. The picture looks worse than it was, there was actually very little clutch material on the bottom of the pan. Fluid is/was M1 ATF which was still red and smelled OK.

Moving on to 400K

Toyota (Aisin) does make a good A/T.
Now if Honda used Aisin's I might eventually buy another.......

The 727 Torque flight in my first Grand Wagoneer ran fine until one day it started slipping badly. On my BIL's advice to drop pan and change filter and replace whatever fluid needed to fill. The pan had about 3/16 " of clutch dust sitting in the pan. Cleaned it, put a new filter and gasket on and filled it up. Worked great after all. In my BMWs, I do filter/drain. Whenever I think of it. The automatics I drove for 35 yrs were fine. I burned one up from a line leak. The other was a torn seal on converter that used 2 qts to drive it 20 miles to the shop. I rigged a cooler in series with the radiator cooler on the Jeeps. The Getrag 4 spds in my BMWs, aren't the ultimate driving machines, but they are long lived with minimal attention. They all let me know when to check the stick. The first shift from low to 2 would feel just like slipping the clutch on a manual. Sure enough. When I checked it hot, it was a pint low. The newer ATs, I don't see the need for for all the speeds. Or the electronic control. An 86 528e got 34 mpg on a road trip. It was controlled by a cable to the throttle body. If I were commuting still, it would be an AT. How efficient do they have to be? How much more friction is involved in all those speeds?

I dont know much about these transmissions...but I am assuming by the name that they were NOT made by Toyota?

+1 That is my OCI 50-55k whenever I get the free Saturday. They shift like new at 200k when you do that. I do 3 cooler line flushes and trade in at 200k. Cost $250 total. Well worth it IMO.

Aisin makes all Toyota transmissions. The pictures above are the reason I never do pan drops anymore. They are always clean.

Oh, I was unaware of this. I have heard that there are only a couple auto manufacturers that actually make there transmissions in house. I know Honda does.

I apologize, I made a typo in my initial post. I meant to write it was 70,000 miles since the last pan drop, I did a couple of drain and fills in between using the same M1 fluid.

I don't usually drop the pan but since I was nearing 300,000 miles I just wanted to see what was going on. Plus the gasket was weeping a bit and it's a very easy pan to drop. 17 bolts and nothing in the way.

The car does have a factory aux cooler (part of a towing package) and my opinion is that it helps to keep the fluid from frying. Plus I also think that M1 is a good ATF.

Yes, that's not unusual. Out in California 400,000+ miles is common.

And they are probably the most reliable in the world.

The JATCO EAT types are just as good. I've got one in my Escort that has over 222K miles in it.
