For an oil change and it cost her about $75 plus. They told her that her Camry uses only Ow20 and that they used Mobil 1 extended performance. I told her that she could use 5w20 and for her to buy the oil and filter at Wally World and I'll do it for her! That's just crazy on the price.

For a grand total of $39.21

My question is was this Camry in or out of warranty coverage?

If it was newer and was still under warranty I believe they were correct that the latest Camry specifies 0w20 oil. Of course you don't need full synthetic oil either. My guess is that Motorcraft has a 0w20 syn blend that would have cost substantially less!

No, what I really think was that the service writer saw a
woman and decided to make a few extra bucks off her.

That is why the consumers call them "$tealerships". So these
crooked creeps can keep whining about how unfair the reputation of this industry is, because they keep proving every freakin day that it deserves just that, a horrid reputation!

They did it cause she was a young woman period. One of my girlfriends was quoted like 350 to put brakes on a escort I got it done and a oil change for 60.00

That's about average for a synthetic oil change as far as I've seen. My ex was getting $80 syn changes st a Pennzoil branded quick oil change place.

Motorcraft does make a 0W20 blend, but hardly anyone stocks it because it has not been fully rolled out. We stock Mazda 0W20 in bottles and Castrol Edge 0W20 in bulk from the Mazda program.

When you take an competitive make car to a Ford dealer for an oil change we go off of the specs we are given. I use Amsoil's page and then if it is not an oil we carry in stock, we get it from O'Reillys because people don't want to wait for it to come from a cheaper vendor. So we get charged 9.19 a quart by them for Mobil 1 or Castrol on our corporate account, plus the filter which for a lot of cars Ford does not make a cross number. Sometimes if we have time to get the parts, I will walk to that dealer and get the filter and oil and bring it back.

It is rather entertaining listening to people that have BMWs and Mercedes that come to us for oil changes crying that it over $100 because their car takes 9 quarts of 0W40 and a fleece filter.

You gotta look at the parenting...

If you live close enough, do it for her like you said, and don't let her pay that much.

I do slightly agree with some of the other comments though, the price isn't totally outlandish for the convenience. At least you know they put in quality oil that is probably good for a nice, extended drain. If she drives an average of 12k a year, that one change could possibly last the entire year. Amortized, $75/year is not a lot.

My local mechanic has a base price of $79 for full synthetic oil changes. I'd never pay that, but it isn't that far out of line and Mobil1 EP 0W20 is about the best oil you could buy.

The point is that the car did not NEED a synthetic oil at all.

As long as the spec was correct it would be just fine...
but instead they saw an opportunity to rip off a customer
who was a woman because she wouldn't know any better.
$tealership!

Everyone has to make a living today so the price is up for grabs. Once you sign the agreement, without asking questions, you are committed to their service.

IMO....she should have asked, up front, what the charges would be before proceeding with the service.

The only question is.....Did she REALLY receive Mobil 1 EP, or just some bulk oil from a drum. This is where the problem starts. If people are informed that they have been serviced with "full Synthetic", EP, motor oil and they run it for 10K+++ while it was truly serviced with only conventional motor oil.

IMO...she should make sure that the service manager signs off, on the detailed service receipt, that she was serviced with Mobil 1, Extended Performance 0w-20 since she plans to have the oil analysed at 10K.

That is a professional way of putting the dealership on notice that you properly maintain your vehicle.

IMO...She should go back to the dealership and make sure that they comply with her request, or else call the credit card company, if charged on a card, to refuse payment. The credit card company, if it is reputable, will call the dealership and ask them to do as you wish.

You should have told her that you'd change it for her to begin with.
OTOH, kudos to the Ford dealer service guys for using the recommended grade in her car.
The price?
Well, the dealership doesn't have people to send out to Walmart to buy supplies. They have supplies they don't stock delivered by their regular vendor, who won't offer Walmart pricing.
I doubt that the service department made any kind of killing on this.
