What's the best/safest way to clean an air flow sensor on a 4Runner V8?

CRC Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner

If you are running the stock air filter then the sensor wires shouldn't be that dirty.

If you mean mass air flow sensor then you need mass air flow sensor cleaner from the parts stores. You can use b12 chemtool on the intake area but don't spray anything else besides MAF cleaner on the MAF sensor wires, any residue left by brake cleaner or carb cleaner will ruin it's readings.

CRC MAF cleaner is the right chemical, but don't count on it to save a failing MAF.

I wouldn't touch the MAF wires with anything but MAF cleaner

A cat whisker would be plenty gentle enough. In fact, direct spray from the MAF cleaner is probably rougher treatment.

I think it would be plenty entertaining to see you wrestling with your cat (I presume it's your cat?) to get said whisker...
