They have too much vibration for any distance of travel. It is ridiculous that a "modern" machine should shake like they do. My riding buddy rides an '07 road glide, and on longer trips (50+ miles)he is constantly shaking his hands out because they go numb from the vibrations.

My Harley is like my dog...when I wash it I just start it up and it shakes itself dry. If it will start.

People buy HD for the unique 45 v-twin feelings or they simply love all those chrome parts. Haha.

But most guys I know how own a Harley won't even use their own bike for a big trip. Instead, they will fly out to a destination and rent a Harley.

What a load of phooey!!

If they're vibrating that much something is wrong! Dump the stock exhaust and catalytic conventor, get them tuned...If you want to be bored riding a bike or fall asleep get a Gold Wing.

My wife and I rode to Sturgis from Texas 2012..

We routinely run up to Eureka Springs (AR) 10 hour ride each way on a long weekend.

Next year going to Sturgis then Montana, down thru Yellowstone, Jackson Hole, Grand Junction (CO), Santa Fe, NM for total of 3500 miles..

I ride mine daily to work and on weekends routinely put 200-300 miles on it! In the past year I've racked up a little over 15k miles on it with no issues. My buddy rode from Central Texas to Fresno, CA then down to LA and across Route 66 to Chicago, up to Milwakee, back to Sturgis, back to Fresno then to Colorado and back to Texas last year. He put 10k miles on his bike in little over 30 days..
Gotta love Harley haters!

Oh, I forgot we rode from Ft Hood to West Monroe, LA two weekends ago to visit the Duck Commander HQ and eat some Mudbugs...almost 900 miles in two days!
And, we did it on a Harley!

The former pastor of my church is on his 2nd 100,000+ mile Harley. No rebuilds. The ignorance being spewed in this thread is once again amazing.

I'm neutral on Harleys, I don't dislike them, but then again I'm not terribly particular to them either. I opine the following:

The only bikes that routinely reach 100,000 miles are Goldwings and R & K series BMWs.

Harleys are quite capable of reaching 100,000, but their owners are seldom willing to ride them that far.

Anything else rarely reaches that type of mileage, you can usually stick a fork in them long before 100,000.

The wife and I have rode our Davidson on several occasions 500-700 miles a day depending on scenery. Rode metrics for 44 years then bought my first Davidson. I'll never go back to a metric.

Hands fall asleep no matter if it's a Davidson or metric.

I was at an import shop, but we serviced everything.

You mean 100,000 miles on the back of a trailer right? Never seen a Harley reach 100,000 miles on the original drivetrain.

Now for something that proves all the Harley hater's wrong. You won't find a metric bike with these miles on it. http://www.jsonline.com/news/wisconsin/46024032.html

dude in NH has 140k on a mid-90s HD...big dresser, I think an Electraglide. His only major repair was a bad clutch last year. Its mechanically stock except for exhaust& tuned carbs.

Are your eyes open.

I ride with quite a few guys who are on stock Harley's and they are hitting 100000 miles with ease.
It's the guys who modify that shorten their bikes lifespan from what I've seen
