Sir Jack Brabham: 1926-2014

A sad day. Black Jack was one of the last racers to survive that era when F1 drivers faced a very real risk of death every time they climbed in the car. It took nerves of steel and immense talent to race and win. Tracks and cars were designed with little thought to driver safety. For him to win three F1 championships, one in a car that he designed, and live to be 88 speaks of his world class talent.

I saw the 1970 Grand Prix of Monaco on television, which if I remember right was broadcast live. That was the race where Brabham almost had it in the bag, but slid into the haybales on the last turn and Rindt slipped past for the win. The disgust on Brabham's face was plain to see. Fabulous race! I miss Formula One of that era, but I don't miss all the tragedy that came with it.
